[Review] How to Read a Paper

There is a paper called "How to read a paper" by Keshav, S. This is a paper on how to read a thesis. It is only 2 pages in total, so if you need to, read it yourself.

This paper tells how to read a paper efficiently. The three-pass method is introduced as a method of reading a thesis. The three-pass method reads the thesis three times and specifies the content. The first is to understand the general idea of the thesis, the second to identify the content that is not detailed, and the third to deeply understand the thesis. The detailed procedure of each process is as follows.

The first pass

A quick scan with Bird's-eye view. It takes about 10 minutes, and it is a step to decide whether to read this article further. What you need to do at this stage is:
1. Read the title, abstract, and introduction carefully.
2. Look at the Section, sub-section and ignore the others.
3. Read the conclusion.
4. Look at the reference and check the papers you have already read.
After this process, you should be able to tell if your article category, background, the legitimacy of the family, contribution of the paper, and whether the paper is clear.
And decide whether to read once more.

The second pass

Second, read more carefully and still ignore details like proof.
1. Look at the pictures and charts in detail.
2. Check for unread related papers.
This process will take about an hour. You should be able to understand the contents of the paper and summarize it. If you do not understand well in this process, you may not be familiar with the field. Then decide if you want to read the paper one more time.

The third pass

To fully understand the thesis, you have to read up to the third. At this stage, we try to re-implement our paper by itself. I find not only the discovery in the paper but also the wrong point. Build a home and think about it yourself. And I think about the follow-up research. It is the process of finding the strengths and weaknesses by establishing the structure of the whole paper.

And this paper also explains how to do literature survey. It is a short description of the necessary process so you may want to read it if necessary.
